Exercise 3

 How I expect the stages of group development might look as I move through my career with the Gardai:

As I enter the Gardai siochána after receiving my training in Templemore I expect I will be excited to begin my new career, along with excitement I expect I will also be a little nervous starting off. I have broken up the five stages of group development and I will explain how I expect it to look and feel.

Forming;

this stage happens in the beginning in the first days in a new job or when a new team is formed. I would be getting acquainted to other members of the team, I expect that some of the team will possibly already know each other from working together previously or be from the same unit. Whatever the case may be I will be getting to know them and their personality as they will mine. Everyone and everything is new at this stage so uncertainty is high and I will be looking for guidance and leadership as I will be finding my way around.

Storming:

Is a natural friction between team members, sometimes there may be clashes in personalities or we may have differences in opinions on how something is done or what should be done, or what the role is etc. When this happens it can cause conflict within the team. I expect at this point that your supervisor or team leader over seeing the team may step in and work with all parties to resolve any conflicts and to offer guidance on how to solve problems together, ensuring that the team members learn to listen to each other and respect each others opinions and finding ways to function both independently and together. people may also disagree with authority and standards set by them. I expect during this storming stage I would be vocal on my opinion while being respectful towards other peoples opinions. Storming can be the most difficult stage to get through, but any issues need to be resolved otherwise it can cause further conflict and low moral with the team which in return affect the job you are doing.

Norming:
As the team moves into the norming stage I will have got to know my team members better. At this stage we will have become comfortable with each other, I would know my place within the team and the strengths and weaknesses of each individual would be established. Relationships will be strengthened and strengths will be recognised. We would not be afraid to ask one another for help and provide constructive feedback. I expect when I first start working for the An Garda Siochána I would try to make as many friendships as I can, I don't expect to be friends personally with everybody but I certainly expect to make an effort with everybody. I will have become comfortable within my team and we may even begin to socialise together. Everything and everyone has become familiar.

Performing:
This stage is when the whole team is working together. I expect I and everyone else will be working to our full potential, delivering the intended results and highly motivated. A high level of trust has been formed with my teammates and the team is aligned around common goals. I would expect this level is where I would stay for most of my career unless i was transferred or a new team was formed.

Adjourning:
This is a difficult stage for many people as it means its' the end of working with a team you have been comfortable working with for a significant period of time, this can happen because of job rotation, job promotions or transferring to a different station, or maybe you have fulfilled your carer in the An Garda Siochána. I expect I would have strong friendships made with my colleagues in which I will have known for a long time. Adjourning from the An Garda Siohána wouldn't be easy, then again at this stage it may be happy to hand over the "baton".
