Exercise 2

 what is trust?

Trust is an ongoing exchange used between people everyday. There are different forms of trust for example, when putting your trust in a person on a personal level it means you believe in them to be honest, reliable and of good character. Trust can be described as an emotion like a natural instinct, or a feeling in which we use to form judgment on a persons character and if we feel they can be trusted. Trust can be earned, it can also be lost and although hard it can be regained.

Example of a trusting relationship?

I'm going to use my relationship with my partner as my example of a trusting relationship. my relationship with my partner is built mainly around trust. We both have a mutual trust for each other and without that it would not be a healthy relationship and therefore it wouldn't survive. Trust is a feeling of confidence and security of knowing and believing that we will always be there for each other. Trust in our relationship is not questioning each other's actions or having any insecurities on where they are or who they are with as we have never have had a reason not to trust and believe in each other. Trust is feeling safe, comfortable and content in being with each other.

What does it take to form a trusting relationship?

i believe honesty, reliability and integrity are the most important traits to have and to look for when forming a new relationship with anyone. We place our trust in people everyday including strangers but when forming a new relationship with someone we are doing so on a personal level weather it be a friendship, a work colleague, or with a new partner it takes time to get to know them as a person. In the beginning we naturally trust them to a degree as we have no reason not to and we expect to be trusted ourselves because we see ourselves as trustworthy individual. As we get to know somebody more you begin to form your own judgment on what kind of person they are and to what level you feel you can trust them. trust is earned on both sides so while you are getting to know them they are also getting to know you and forming their own opinion of you too.

You need to have complete trust in your fellow colleagues and them in you, if you are on a call out to investigate a crime or disturbance you need to feel confident in the trust and knowledge that your fellow attending officer will be there for you if assistance is required. When entrusted with or assigned a case which includes taking statements from someone you will be trusted to write down all the details as told by that person, investigate and report your findings honestly and without prejudice. Trust is essential in all aspects of being a Garda.

What is the importance of building trust between the public and the Gardai?

The members of the public must be able to feel they can trust the Gardai to uphold the law, to protect and serve the public to the best of their ability. The public need to have the confidence and trust in the Garda that if they are in need of help or have been a victim of a crime that they can report it safely and that action will be taken, trust that those that may have broken the law will be charged with appropriately whilst the victim receives the support they may need. Gardai have an obligation to enforce the law and to be able to do so they also need to have the help, trust and respect from the public when doing so. As a majority, the public do trust the Gardai and with the Gardai continuously working close within the community are building relationships with the people and in return helps to build the trust even further.
